Lightning found a jujube tree at the foot of Maoshan mountain. The tree held.

The wood that survived is what we work with. Not because it possesses anything. Because it is the kind of material that has been through something most things have not — and remained whole.

Each pendant is carved by hand from lightning-struck jujube wood gathered seasonally at Maoshan (茅山), Jiangsu province — one of the oldest centers of Daoist practice in China, with over 1,900 years of unbroken tradition. The Daoist character on the front is incised by hand, one stroke at a time, then filled with mineral gold pigment using a technique used in Daoist woodcraft for over a thousand years.

No two pieces are identical. No two pieces carry the same grain. No two pieces have weathered the same strike in the same way.

The cord is braided silk in dark earth tones, weighted with a natural amber bead and solid brass fittings. It rests against the chest — close to the place in Daoist thought called xin (心): heart-mind. The seat of intention. The place where things are known before the thinking mind catches up.

Wear it not as a charm. Wear it as a reminder — of the peace that does not need to be found, only returned to.

We produce this pendant in limited numbered batches. When a batch sells out, we do not restock it. The wood itself does not allow that.
